Living in the city of malvasia

A golden grape, small and oval. With intense flavor and the syrupy aroma of Muscat.

Historical records say that this variety was introduced into the peninsula in the mid-fourteenth century by soldiers from the crown of Aragon known as Almogávares. The combatants returned from a long expedition of reconquest from the Greek colony of Byzantium, in the route of the pilgrims who rested in Turkey.

The soldiers planted the Malvasia vine shoots for the first time in the orchards of Valencia and this gave rise to new varieties of high quality wines during the 16th and 17th centuries. During the Middle Ages it was attributed tonic or medicinal properties and appears quoted in Tirant Lo Blanc

General Ramon Muntaner, who had fought in Constantinople under Roger de Flor, returned in 1307 and shortly after his arrival he married his beloved Xirivella, a wealthy landowner who owned land and a farmhouse. The general planted there the purest Hellenic variety of Malvasia and from that land spread throughout the country of the time to reach Catalonia and in a short time to Sitges.

Approximately seven centuries ago, Sitges was an agricultural community open to the sea and the fishing business. The Malvasia grape occupied at that time eighty percent of the fields. The Malvasia was a very appreciated aromatic variety and yet very susceptible to pests, diseases and fungi produced by moisture and very sensitive to the characteristics of the land. The arrival of the dreaded disease of the phylloxera vines and the boom of champagne at the end of the 19th century marked the decline of Malvasia aimed at its demise.

Aware of this threat, shortly before his death, the Sicilian diplomat Manuel Llopis i Casadas [1885 – 1935] wanted to avoid it, bequeathing a vineyard that had been located in the fields of Aiguadolç to the Hospital of San Juan Bautista, as well as the family business of Malvasía.

Thanks to this cultural and patrimonial legacy, a small and select production of our beloved Malvasía is still cultivated in the Celler of the Sitges Hospital.

For centuries, Malvasía de Sitges has spoken to us in its own language. He came from Greece, survived wars and diseases and still has a lot to tell us today.

The CIM promoted by the Foundation of the Hospital of San Juan Bautista de Sitges, is located in the old Corral de la Vila and in the old winery of the Hospital, it is a building that dates from the eighteenth century and that from now on will host different public events like jazz concerts and exhibitions.

The oenologist Bruno Tannino stressed that the center can mean “the beginning of the recovery of a very important legacy for Sitges and can help to be an important socio-economic boosting potential”.

The Malvasía de Sitges has always been much more than a sweet wine. His relationship with Sitges is part of a keen sense of appreciation that goes back to his origins. The center will now form part of the touristic and museum interest of the region.

The vineyards of the Hospital are a treasure. These strains of Malvasía of Sitges are an endearing heritage of the vine-growing origin of our town. Thanks to all our ancestors who actively participated in preserving the historical legacy, Sitges and the Hospital, they continue to maintain the responsibility of cultivating, producing and marketing this variety so rooted in our territory and the backbone of our identity.

At the beginning of May 2010, from the San Juan Bautista Hospital Foundation in Sitges, a micro-patronage project was led to replant some strains of Malvasía de Sitges within the plot in the Hospital field. After removing the old vines, and leaving the land fallow for two years, they were able to replant almost 700 vines.

Recently a new initiative has been promoted that can link a good part of the citizenship and consists of a public appeal so that all those who wish can with their contribution replant the plot of the Hospital, and preserve the production of Malvasia.
